Summer Beauty Essentials

Must have items for your makeup bag this summer

Although it may be hard to believe if you look out the window these days, it is actually Summer. At the moment, we are not experiencing much in the way of sunshine but I am being optimistic for today’s post! I am keeping my fingers crossed for some sunshine to make an appearance between now and our family holiday later in the year so for that reason I thought I would share with you some summer-related makeup and beauty tips!

In the warmer weather, spirits are lifted, clothes get brighter and often our makeup gets lighter too. Heavier makeup tends to slide off the face in high temperatures and humidity and if you are holidaying abroad, then often you don’t want to be carting your whole makeup collection with you!
Plus, you often tend to want to spend less time getting ready while on hols and often we take a much more relaxed approach to dressing up for the evening or whatever. As a result, I have made a list of some items which are very handy to have in your summer makeup bag.

Tinted moisturiser or BB/CC cream.

Lidl Cien BB Cream

Unless you really wouldn’t feel comfortable without your full armour, then skip the heavy foundations and opt for something lighter like a tinted moisturiser or CC cream instead. I picked up this one from Lidl's new makeup range the other day for €3.99 and I think it will do the job quite well. You can always add concealer where you need it to cover blemishes, redness, under eye circles etc but a lighter base product will be not only quicker to apply but also allow your skin to “breathe” a bit more in the heat.

I have also heard good things about The Body Shop's Vitamin E Cool BB Cream recently as a product that gives good coverage and refreshes the skin without breaking the bank. I'm also curious about the Urban Decay Naked Skin  Beauty Balm which has SPF20 protection included also. Obviously sun protection  cream for the face and body goes without saying but if you have a base product with added SPF too then that will give you a further bit of protection.

Multi-tasking products.

Pippa Palette, Pro Strobe Palette and Nars Mulitple are all multipurpose.

If you are travelling and want to pack light, pick one staple palette for instance that you can create various looks with from day to night. The Pippa for Blank Canvas cosmetics palette is a great example of this as you have a selection of eyeshadows, a blusher, a bronzer/contour shade and a highlighter all in one palette. Similarly, a powder contour/highlight palette like this one from Freedom can give you more options as the shades can double up as eyeshadows.
Another great multi use product is a cream blush stick. I have one of the Nars multiple sticks which can be used as a lipstick, a cream blush and also a wash of colour on the eyelids. Lots of other brands offer their own blush sticks like Sleek, Soap and Glory, No.7 and Makeup Revolution to name a few.

Waterproof mascara.

Kiko waterproof mascara

Waterproof mascara is essential in hot and humid weather to avoid smudging and flaking and also to avoid panda eyes if you're going to be jumping into a pool or going for a paddle in the sea. There are tons of great waterproof mascaras on the market at the moment - from budget brands like Collection to higher end ones from Lancome and Dior. The Maybelline Lash Sensational is one of my favourite mascaras and I've just discovered that there is a waterproof version of this available too so that will be on my holiday list!

Make up remover wipes.

Primark Argan Oil Facial Cleansing Wipes

Confession time! I don't have the space to bring my entire bathroom shelf on holliers with me and it's one of the few times that I don't feel guilty about using makeup remover wipes! They are great for travelling and really do save on a lot of packing space and especially if you are only taking carry on luggage. These Argan Oil Cleansing wipes cost only €1.50 for 2 packs from Penneys - perfect for throwing in the suitcase and not getting upset over if you forget to bring them back home at the end of your trip!

Lip Glosses.

Sleek Matte Me Lip Gloss, MUA Lip Gloss and Sleek Lip Gloss.

A gloss or liquid lipstick is so much easier to slick on in a hurry and even sometimes without a mirror! I like to bring a couple of shades of lipgloss, usually a pale pink and a nude beige, and perhaps one of my favourite lipsticks and that's it. On holidays I usually don't bother with lipliner either.

So that's a brief roundup of what I'll be putting in my holiday makeup bag this year. What would you add to this list? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
