Why I Started Blogging

I’ve something a little different to chat to you about today – I’ve decided that I’m going to share with you the reasons why I started this blog. There are undeniably tons of beauty bloggers out there and more and more are setting up new blogs every day. In fact the “market” – if you want to call it that – is quite saturated and it is becoming increasingly hard to get your voice heard.  So why did I decide to add another website to the already growing pile of websites out there?

First of all, let me just say that I’m in no way putting any other bloggers down – in my opinion there is space for us all and everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses – including me. There are undeniably a small number of massive bloggers out there with hundreds of thousands, or millions, of followers who can literally only have to put their name to a product and it sells out in record time. I applaud those business women (or men) for what they’ve done but that’s not really “me” and I can’t see myself with my own beauty range or merchandise or any of that anytime soon!

The idea came to me to start a blog while at home on maternity leave after having my first baby. I wouldn’t say I exactly found myself with time on my hands – it was more a case that I was struggling to adjust to this new version of myself who now had this tiny person who relied on me for everything. At the time, my husband was travelling a lot for work and due to not being in work myself, I was missing out on adult company and conversations about things other than nappies and bottles and how was he sleeping or not sleeping.  I felt like I needed some sort of outlet that was just for me and a way to express myself. I also felt that makeup for me was a way to improve how I was feeling about myself even more so now that I had become a Mum – your body goes  through so many changes and even putting the face on or treating yourself to a face mask can really make you feel better on those crappy days.

Starting out, I hadn’t a notion what I was doing. My first ever blog post was a review of a Glossybox beauty box and I had taken the photos on my iphone 4 on the floor of my living room – and not in the best lighting! I had no Instagram account, no Twitter account and was terrified at the thought of putting myself out there on Facebook. I emailed a  fellow Irish blogger whom I trust wholeheartedly, Sinead from The Beautiful Truth, for some advice and asked her if she wouldn’t mind taking a look at my blog to see what I could improve on, and she was so helpful and encouraging – while offering the constructive criticism that I needed too. In fact I still refer to her email now and again to keep myself on track! It’s no surprise given her expertise that she has since gone on to set up her own Anseo workshops to help bloggers like me to improve their skills and that they have already been a huge success here in Ireland.

As Little Man got a bit bigger and I went back to work, I hit the pause button on the blog for a good while to give myself time to adjust to yet more new routines. I only really fell back in love with it this time last year, and after a couple of redesigns and a few tweaks, I’m really enjoying it. My intention was never to achieve popularity, be sent loads of products or get invited to big events. To develop that sort of relationship with brands and others and to earn respect in the community takes a very long time and a lot of hard work and dedication and it has to be earned – no one is “entitled” to anything.

While the coming up with ideas, the writing, the photography, the editing and the social media posts take time and planning, I don’t consider it “work”. For me, it’s a hobby and a passion and I have a full-time job still so the blog is something that’s for me and for my readers who are fellow makeup and beauty addicts – and some are Mums too who can relate to the first time Mum rants. My day job, while I’m very happy in it, is very much focused on figures and numbers, and funnily enough, English and creative writing were my favourite subjects in school – I won’t tell you how many years ago that was… Simply put, I love makeup. I love how having your face on gives you that little extra push and bit of confidence to face the day. And I love discovering new products.

I refer to this in the Disclaimer on my home page too, but if you haven’t read that, and in the interest of being totally open and honest with you all, I have never been paid to promote or review a product. I do occasionally get sent products for review, but if I have, that will be 100% clear in the blog post and I will only consider products that I would use if I had paid for them myself too. For instance, the skincare that I reviewed a while ago is still a firm favourite of mine and still sits on my bathroom shelf. If that situation does arise, I will tell you upfront about it and with me, what you see is what you get – I’m too old at this stage to do otherwise!

Not everything I buy ends up being something I fall in love with and not everything will get a good review. While you might not find many “bad” reviews on my blog itself, I will tell most definitely tell you if I’ve tried something that I think you shouldn’t waste your money on, either on the blog or on my social media pages and I will 100% give you my honest opinion. I will continue to do so – if you will continue reading that is – and I hope that what I write is useful or informative.

Lastly, I have met some really lovely ladies through the blogging community – some of which I have met in person and some that I only chat to online but weirdly feel like I know “in real life” already as we have so much in common. To all those lovely ladies, I say keep doing what you are doing - you are amazing and you are the support system that I could not do without so thank you.

I will have a post coming next week in which you will find out who some of those lovely folk are. So that’s all I have to say for now. I really just wanted to tell you a little more about me and why I’m here – and this post has been sitting in my “drafts” for a while actually and I was debating over whether to publish it or not so I thought “why not”. All will be back to normal next week with the beauty reviews and my usual posts but for now, thanks for reading and thanks for all your support so far.

Bye for now,
